The 2009 honda civic sedan presents a bolder face to the world, thanks mainly to a new front bumper cover. Where the previous bumper looked solid and heavy, with a single, subtle horizontal opening at the center, the new design incorporates a taller, more trapezoidal center opening with secondary scoop-like openings on either side. A grid-like insert in the center opening contrasts with a kind of cyclone-fence theme in the side scoops. These changes break up some of the visual mass of the bumper. The upper grille opening is also more angular than before, which goes well with the changes below. As before, a bright horizontal bar, with a prominent honda h in the middle, dominates the upper grille. Slender headlamp assemblies still angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. Revisions to the headlights are more subtle, consisting only of where and how the color seems to show through the existing lenses. Gone is the delicate, two-tiered upper grille insert, leaving just the honda logo centered in a oval-themed black mesh. The trapezoidal opening below has been flipped, so it's now wider at the top than the bottom, and the scoops to either side are drawn out wider and more horizontal, divided midway by a horizontal strut.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the sail panel (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model. The coupe's forms an acute angle with the horizontal deck surface, emphasizing the two-door body style; while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail end add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top.  on the 2009 si sedan, the grille bar is black instead of chrome. On both coupes and sedans an si badge tucks into the grille's lower left side, and oval fog lights are set into the bumper's outboard openings. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. An interestingly shaped rear spoiler wraps over the outboard edges of the sedan's trunk lid; on the coupe, the spoiler is free-standing. Both sedan and coupe roll on their own unique alloy wheels. The hybrid, in contrast, is understated, with just a small hybrid badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  many of the fabrics in the civic's.

This is a traditional american luxury sedan. It's roomy and comfortable. It's smooth and stable. And it's luxurious.  people who buy town cars like them; the town car is the highest-rated american car in the mid-luxury segment, according to a j. Some 75 percent of limousine and livery fleets are made up of this large american luxury sedan. Yet individuals still account for more than 65 percent of all town car sales.  the town car was extensively re-engineered for the 2003 model year with a new frame, a new rack-and-pinion steering system, a new brake system, and new front and rear suspensions. This resulted in improved handling. Revised front and rear styling distinguished the changes, but the styling revisions were subtle.  changes have been minimal since then. Sharing the standard (117. 7-inch) wheelbase are the signature 42,055), signature limited 44,920), and designer series 46,435). Options are somewhat limited at this level.  signature limited adds soundmark audiophile dual-media sound system; leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with wood inserts and audio, speed and climate controls; full power trunk with key fob open and close; memory driver's seat, pedals and mirrors; heated front seats; and its own 17-inch, 10-spoke machined aluminum wheels, also, a wider range of options become available.  designer adds chrome trim on the b-pillar, door handles, and its unique18-spoke wheels. The division tried to retire the stand-up ornament earlier in the decade, but customers complained that they used it as a lane marker on the road and, to better locate the front of the car's long hood when parking.  the trunk lid opening is wide and low to make loading and unloading easier. A covered and removable storage tray fills the deepest part of the trunk well. The panel is elegant, even fun to look at. There's plenty of burl walnut veneer all around the interior, plus brushed satin metal panels, and a winged analog clock at the top center of the dash.  the up-level wood-and-leather steering wheel features buttons for cruise, audio, and climate controls. The instruments feature large, easy-to-read numbers. Storage space abounds: a fold-down front armrest with a double-hinged top can be opened to either the driver's or passenger's side. Cupholders and a storage tray come out from the front edge of the center front seat. Storage pouches are sewn into the front cushion of the front seats. There are also hinged storage bins in the front doors, a large glove box. Atlas-sized pockets in the front seatbacks, and a fold-down rear armrest with storage and cupholders.  the interior is very quiet, with thick insulation in the floor, firewall and pillars. This allows maximum fidelity from the 145-watt alpine sound system, which includes am, fm, cassette and single cd play (a trunk-mounted 6-disc changer is optional on all models except signature). A big sedan with lexus quality and a toyota price. introductionthe avalon is toyota's top of the line model. It's a big, comfortable sedan that feels quick on its feet; it's hard to tell just by looking at it, but the avalon handles well and delivers a satisfying ride. This engine produces 210 horsepower with 220 pounds-feet of torque.  xl models come fully equipped with side air bags, dual-zone air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, and a 120-watt am/fm stereo with cassette and cd players. Xls models add automatic climate control, a driver information display (compass, trip computer, outside temperature and calendar functions), fog lights, aluminum alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. walkaroundthe avalon isn't much to look at. Its best features are electronic and mechanical. That isn't to say it's unattractive, it's just not eye-catching. It looks like a toyota sedan. The wing-shaped halogen headlights and wide grille with vertical rails provide a slightly toothy smiley-face look. The avalon is roomy inside and provides plenty of shoulder room. However, high windowsills make the chamber feel deep. Carrying of long, narrow objects is made easier as the rear center seat has a pass-through that opens up to the trunk.  the interior sports ample doses of burled walnut, good, simple switchgear, and solid-feeling control stalks. There's even a leather boot on the column-shift lever, a nice touch. Also included are soothing electro-chromatic mirrors that self-adjust to reduce glare, and an easy to adjust dual climate-control system providing independent climates for driver and passenger.  the data system is … well, aren't they all mostly just toys? The avalon's 'multi-information display' is in a big rectangular window in the center of the instrument panel. The feel of the leather, the doses of walnut, the big recessed instrument panel, and especially the inside shape of the c-pillars, all make the avalon interior reminiscent of a seville. But the car's big trick is that little attention is required, it works so well. Toyota couldn't have asked for better work from the guys in nvh (noise, vibration, harshness). All we could hear on a rainy day was a creaking in the windshield wipers, like an old screen door opening and closing, opening and closing.  the ride is flawless. Handling via rack-and-pinion steering is tight, even direct. While some still call such feeling 'no character,' we think 'purity' is a better call. Oh, the chassis can be felt lightly rising and falling over undulations, but that's not a flaw, it's a soft balance appropriate to the car. We could see the water, we could hear it, but we couldn't feel it. We hit a shallow double pothole in the river. We heard a light thump, but scarcely felt it. We drove over a washboard-unpaved road. We felt it, but not much.  then we got a little daring in the wet, blasting through a two-lane sweeper heavy on the throttle at 65 mph. Something faster, smarter and more sensitive than us was doing all the tricky work.  we mashed the brake pedal as hard and fast as we could. Excellent anti-lock brakes said, 'no problem. Because we were full on the pedal, brake assist wasn't triggered. We never felt them.  we saved the most exotic for last: vehicle skid control. It's a lexus hand-me-down, remaining innovative as it moves along from $50,000 cars to $30,000 ones. It's only available on the xls, but it's a lot of option for $850. No, it's a steal for $850. Using throttle or brake intervention, vsc makes the appropriate adjustment in grip. We found a sharp curve with good visibility and no ditch. It claims that a league-leading 51 percent of them buy another avalon, plus another 26 percent move up to lexus, or at least buy another toyota. So maybe no attention-grabbing fanfare is needed. They'll discover the car, if they haven't already.  this is a great sedan, though it seems like the dignified styling could use a bit of swoop or flash to match the performance. We'd love to see a jet-black avalon with a lowered nose and vintage red pearl flames streaming from that toothy grin. For 18 years the ford f-150 has been the best selling pickup in the u. S., and for the past 13 years running it has also been the best selling vehicle in the u. Not the taurus, not the accord. The front end bears little resemblance to previous noses, although the oval ford logo immediately identifies the truck. The grille opening is changed, the headlights have a new shape, and the lower bumper has been redesigned. Note here that the f-150 comes in so many permutations that what is said about a design specific on one may have little to do with another. The tail features new-look taillights that are inset and wrap around.  overall, the truck has surprisingly rounded lines. Ford says that vehicle ruggedness traditionally had been characterized by angular forms. But all those sharp edges played havoc with aerodynamics, which meant lower fuel economy and more wind noise. So ford designers went for a look that was more aero, but still conveyed ruggedness. And why they buy it. Ford knows f-150 owners very well indeed, and has broken them down into major groups.  know anybody who fits one of these categories? He buys a regular cab flareside xl and represents one sale in 10. Also one in 10 sales. Next is established and stable with kids in school and wife back to work. He buys a higher-series xlt, maybe a supercab. Three of 10 sales, so an important customer. When this guy ages, he enters free-spirited senior land, and he goes for the top of the line xlt or lariat and maybe supercab. He's good for another three in 10 sales. When ford was doing its marketing homework in preparation for the new truck, time and time again the researchers heard owners of extended cab trucks plead for more room behind the seats, and easier access. Which is precisely what they'll get in the new truck with the new passenger-side third door option.  like all pickups, the new f-150 is available in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is a short and long wheelbase styleside regular cab, a short and a long styleside supercab, a short flareside regular cab and short flareside supercab. The flaresides have aerodynamic lower moldings, a side step and other cosmetic features.  the standard engine for the new truck is a new 4. 2-liter v6 that produces a hefty 205 hp at 4400 rpm, which is a considerable advantage over the competing standard engines. Chevrolet's c/k has 180 hp, the dodge ram has 170 hp.  the ford v6 also produces 255 lb.-ft. Of torque, with 92 percent of that available at 1500 rpm. That means low-end acceleration and more trailer-towing capacity. A 4. 6-liter with 210 hp is available now, with a more powerful 5. 4-liter v8 due this fall. The smaller v8's advantage over the standard six is more torque: 290 lb.-ft. Vs. 255.  all engines come with a 5-speed manual standard, with a 4-speed electronically-controlled automatic optional. All models are available with 4-wheel drive.  after decades of twin i-beam, the f-150 finally has a new front suspension, which ford describes as upper short and long arm (sla). On 4x2 trucks, the sla suspension uses coil springs that react against a forged upper arm and a cast spindle, with control arms bolted to the frame. At the rear is a solid axle with a leaf spring on top of the axle.  the 4x4 truck us. interiorthe interior of the f-150 is far more car-like than before, surprisingly so, in light of the truck's rugged (ford would never say macho) image. The basic instrument cluster contains gauges for the important functions, but no tachometer. The usual controls are to the right in a soft-cornered rectangle. The radio has a real on/off knob, but tunes with a rocker switch.  organic shapes abound-door handle, glove box handle, ashtray door, vents. The standard seat is a 3-person bench with a 40/60 split bench standard on some models. There is increased storage area behind the seat and more clearance for the optional reclining seats.  the supercab has more rear-seat leg room than the previous f-150. A split bench rear seat is available. The lower cushion of the rear seat can be folded into a flat floor.  nice touches include extra-large cupholders, a second power point on the instrument panel for laptop computers and the like, an optional driver's side secondary visor shade, a glove box handle oriented toward the driver, adjustable d-rings for greater ease of shoulder belt adjustment, two large coat hooks and a passenger grab handle.  f-150 models are available in standard, xl, xlt and lariat interiors. Never has a full-size pickup been so refined. Ford has taken the truck out and given it a car-like feel in this respect, just as the designers did with the interior.  the ride is smooth and motion free. In its place, a compliant ride that soaks up road irregularities. For anyone with a lot of truck time, it's almost spooky the way it goes down the road. It's also quiet in there. The new rounded shape did its job in that department--no wind noise.  typically, a pickup's box and frame are designed separately, then bolted together. This time around, the two systems were designed to work together. The result is an absence of squeaks and rattles, even on rough terrain. The truck has a solid feel that has nothing to do with ruggedness. This one is built to endure.  both engines are strong, with the increased torque of the v8 obvious in a back-to-back comparison. But without that comparison, no one would likely sell the v6 short. Both are smooth, with the v8 a bit quieter.  the most remarkable thing about these engines is how much power, particularly torque, ford has been able to extract from relatively small displacements. Both engines are based on ford's highly successful 4. 6-liter modular v8, used in several passenger cars. For truck use, the 4. 6 induction system was retuned for stronger low-end performance. Overhead cam engines aren't part of american truck tradition, but we don't think anyone will have any trouble adapting to this one. summaryit's obvious the f-150 has been a good truck. But ford decided keeping its top spot meant making a good thing better, and showed confidence in also making it quite a bit different in the process. There may seem to be a bit of bet-hedging here, since ford will keep the 1996 model on sale through most of the year, but that's only because of the changeover required at two more plants.  will ford's new f-150 encounter resistance? Only time will tell. The north american truck of the year jury gave the f-150 top honors this year, and we think they called it right.
